Amelia man arrested after traffic stop

Sau Van Nguyen, 54, of Magnolia Street in Amelia, was arrested at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday for driving while intoxicated second offense, failure to signal, improper lane usage and driving under suspension. A deputy patrolling the Bayou Vista area observed a vehicle fail to signal a turn onto Saturn Road and then travel in the opposing lane. A traffic stop was conducted.

While speaking with the driver, identified as Nguyen, the deputy smelled the odor of alcohol on his breath and person, and the deputy observed that Nguyen had difficulty maintaining his balance, the report stated. During the investigation, Nguyen refused to submit to a breath test. Nguyen was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported the following arrests:

—Deborah Broussard Jones, 54, of Chetta Lane in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:32 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant for issuing worthless checks. Jones was released on a summons to appear in court on April 17.

—Albert J. Vaughn, 78, of Utah Street in Berwick, was arrested at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant for issuing worthless checks. Vaughn was released on a summons to appear in court on April 17.

—Jadi Guerrero, of Neptune Street in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of disobeying a traffic light and no child restraint. A deputy conducting a traffic stop made contact with Guerrero and learned of the warrant for her arrest. She was taken to the parish jail and held. Guerrero was released on a $344.50 bail.

—Aketa Francis, 20, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:07 p.m. Tuesday on two warrants from Morgan City police for failure to appear on the charges of simple battery. While conducting an investigation in Amelia, a deputy made contact with Francis and learned of the warrant for her arrest. She was taken to the Morgan City Police Department. No bail is set.

—Rigoberto Barrios Cruz, 27, of Odile Lane in Amelia, was arrested at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday for operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the United States. A deputy patrolling the Amelia area observed a vehicle with a headlight that was out and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, Cruz was unable to produce a valid driver’s license or identification. Cruz was taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set.

Morgan City Assistant Police Chief Glenn Blanco reported the following arrests:

—Aketa Francis, 20, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:23 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to pay fine and contempt of court. Francis was booked and released on personal recognizance bail.

—Patrick Franklin, 44, of Federal Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday for domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace intoxicated, resisting an officer, simple battery on a police officer.

Police responded to Federal Avenue in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, they observed a male and female fighting. They were advised to stop fighting.

Once doing so, Franklin grabbed an officer, and they began fighting, the report stated. Franklin was subsequently arrested. It was determined that Franklin and the female victim had been drinking all day, the report stated. She was attempting to leave the residence when Franklin grabbed her in an attempt to keep her from leaving, they then fell to the ground and began fighting, the report stated. According to police, Franklin and the female victim were boyfriend and girlfriend. Franklin was taken to jail and held with no bail set at this time.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
