BATON ROUGE — The long, hot, humid summers in the Deep South can cause electric bills to skyrocket as people turn on their air conditioners for relief.

Stinging caterpillars coming soon to south Louisiana

The stinging buck moth caterpillar is immerging in the area, according to Tim Scholwalter, LSU AgCenter forestry entomologist. “People experience the painful sting of the caterpillars either by stepping on them on the ground or by brushing against them on walls or shrubs,” he said.

HAMMOND — The stinging caterpillars that will become buck moths are beginning to appear in south Louisiana and will be active through May.
