One variance was granted by the Franklin Zoning Board of Adjustment Thursday.

Ray Pontiff asked for a variance to allow him to use a building at 702 Anderson St., zoned R-3, to house migrant workers for planting season, Aug. 1 through Oct. 1. Pontiff had received the same variance last year. He said hiring migrant workers is the only option available, since local help doesn’t want the work he offers.

He said that the structure will be sold and a buyer has already been secured, so he’ll take the proceeds to provide housing for his workers on the farm the following season.

A boarding house is not specifically prohibited except in that the code does not list it under allowed uses.

The variance was approved, 3-1, with board member Amanda Guillory voting against. Guillory said the intent of variances to the zoning code is to alleviate hardships imposed on owners and residents as a result of creating of the zoning law. She said she didn’t believe Pontiff’s request qualified under that provision.
