2nd man pleads guilty to Morgan City armed robbery

FRANKLIN, La. — The man alleged to have pulled a .25-caliber handgun in a Dec. 9, 2012, armed robbery on Eleventh Street in Morgan City pleaded guilty this week in the 16th District Judicial Court in Franklin.

Devante Dewey, 20, of Morgan City, faces a minimum of 10 to 99 years in prison without benefit of suspension or parole when he is sentenced on Sept. 4, assistant district attorney Anthony Saleme said.

His accomplice, Henry Lee Gaines, 28, pleaded guilty last month to simple robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon, although a witness said Dewey was the one holding the gun in the robbery. District Judge Edward M. Leonard Jr. imposed a sentence of 15 years in prison on Gaines for the weapons violation along with a five-year concurrent sentence on the simple robbery charge. Gaines agreed to testify against Dewey if the case had gone to trial.

The men were arrested by Morgan City police after Christopher Gough of Morgan City reported on Dec. 9, he had been robbed at gun point by two men. Gough claimed the person holding the gun said, “He was going to put a bullet in his chest,” the report said. Gough said a juvenile with the men fled.

While making his report at the police department, Gough looked towards the Solar Apartments and pointed out the pair who he had just described as having robbed him, according to a police report. Both men were staying at the apartment complex at the time of their arrest, the report said.

Gaines said they and a juvenile had followed Gough from the Shell station on La. 182 to “beat him up,” the report stated. Gaines and the juvenile both gave statements in the report accusing Dewey of producing the weapon and robbing the victim.

Gaines said Dewey hid the gun in a cabinet in Gaines’ apartment, the report stated.

Dewey denied “all allegations that a robbery took place,” claiming that he went to the Shell station on La. 182 to buy cigarettes and returned home to his apartment, the report said.

—Ken Enclarde, 34, of Meraux pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit simple robbery. He will face sentencing on Sept. 4. The charges were reduced from second-degree robbery. Cody Carlino of Patterson accused Enclarde and two others of accosting him after he left Legends Bar in the Morgan City Holiday Inn around 2 a.m. on March 3, 2012.

Two of the assailants took $500 and walked away after he offered his wallet in order to not be beaten up, the victim told Morgan City police. He said the other man, he later identified as Enclarde, demanded his Breitling watch for which he said he paid $4,100, a police report said.

Another man told Morgan City police that Enclarde tried to sell him a Breitling watch, which Enclarde said he had gotten from robbing someone at Legends Bar, the report said.

—Brad Derouen, 22, of Morgan City was given a five-year suspended sentence for second offense marijuana possession. He had been given a similar sentence five years ago when he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana. His arrest was before his probation concluded. By the time of his guilty plea the probation period had expired on May 16.
